The story
Bistrot du Bac is a French bistro at Sumatraweg 5b in Rotterdam, rated 12.5 by Gault&Millau in 2026. Maartje and Joost van de Braak have run it since 2019, on Deliplein in Katendrecht.
Small linen-covered tables, Thonet chairs and a black-and-white tiled floor set the tone. At the back, a mezzanine holds the open kitchen and two extra tables with a view of the cooks. The menu is printed in French and Dutch. Lekker500 kept the bistro in its Top 500 for 2026 and describes service under Joost as warm, informal and knowledgeable.
The seasonal three-course menu with choices costs €61.50 and changes regularly. Many meals begin with oeuf mayonnaise and a glass of crémant de Bourgogne. The classic French repertoire also includes escargots, steak tartare, onglet and île flottante, and a fresh madeleine comes at the end. Recent reviews single out turbot with mussels and crémant foam, served with fries and homemade mayonnaise. Vegetarians should mention it when booking, as the kitchen does not cook vegan.
