The story
NY Basement is a French and modern cuisine restaurant in the basement of Hotel New York at Koninginnenhoofd 1, Rotterdam, and it scored 12 with Gault&Millau in 2026. The kitchen and the bar share one lower-level room, so a dinner can start with a drink and end with a full menu.
The kitchen brigade is led by Rob van der Burg, and the team cooks with seasonal ingredients and attention to flavour. Guests can build their own dinner from starters, intermediate courses, mains and desserts, or hand the evening to the chef with the Chef's Special in four or five courses. When several courses are ordered, the staff will suggest a glass of wine to match each one. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.
The bar is the room's centrepiece, stretching 11 metres along one side. Bartenders shake and serve handcrafted cocktails, which makes it a good stop for a planned evening or a spontaneous drink. The space seats around 150 guests and has a nod to New York in the 1920s and 1930s.
On the first Sunday of every month, the restaurant hosts Sinatra Sunday. Live music from Frank In Person fills the room, and the dishes draw on the Manhattan of the past. Vegetarians and guests with allergies can note their needs when they reserve, and the kitchen will plan around them.
