The story
Sternen, at Sennhüttestrasse 1 in Wangen bei Dübendorf near Zürich, has held one Michelin star (2026) for its classic cuisine. Matthias Brunner and Bettina Brunner-Schill have run the inn as a family since 2005.
Matthias trained as a chef at Gasthof Bären in Mägenwil and later worked in Crissier for Frédy Girardet. Bettina grew up in her parents' inn in the Black Forest and qualified as a restaurant manager in Switzerland. The two met at Daniel Bumann's restaurant in La Punt, and Sternen has been their home ever since.
Gault&Millau awards 15 points (2026). Its latest report praised a sea bass ceviche with a well-judged acidity and crunchy fried onion. The turbot with crisp potato scales, asparagus and chive sauce was cooked precisely. The woolly pig cannelloni also won over the inspector. The wine list leans toward Switzerland and is fairly priced.
The Badstube is a vaulted room that was once a bathhouse and later a coal cellar. Today it serves seasonal, market-driven dishes with a subtle Mediterranean accent. The Gaststube is more relaxed, with a creaking oak floor and walnut tables. It offers home-cooked food with a modern twist, plus lighter bistro plates and a glass from the specials board.
