The story
Damianz, at Pollartstraat 7 in Roermond, is a fine dining restaurant with a French base and Asian accents, housed in the city's former prison. Gault&Millau rated it 16 in 2026, and the Michelin Guide lists it as recommended.
Chef Jeroen van Gansewinkel built his career in some of Limburg's best gastronomic kitchens. His classical training anchors dishes with worldly influences, and shellfish and poultry often take the lead. Menus run from four to eight courses, with lunch served on Thursday to Saturday. Maître-sommelier David Manders pairs them with European wines.
Lekker500 placed Damianz in its Top 500 in 2026, and its reviewers describe a crisp artichoke shell filled with tuna tartare, finished with nori, mirin sauce and soy pearls. A scallop on goat cheese ravioli with bergamot and lemon thyme foam stood out, as did rose-roasted veal loin with eggplant and mint purée. In other years the veal came with a vadouvan-spiced sauce, left on the table for guests to pour themselves. Even the opening bread arrives as a shiitake chip beside a celery and apple water.
The building served as Roermond's city prison until 2007, and it is named after Bishop Damianus. Steel cell doors and barred windows remain, and hotel rooms occupy the old cell blocks. Low partitions divide the restaurant into four spaces in earthy, warm tones, and guests can watch the team work in the open kitchen. In summer, the courtyard terrace sits among olive trees and an herb garden.
