The story
The Duchess, a Mediterranean restaurant at Spuistraat 172 in Amsterdam, was listed as Michelin Recommended in 2026. The dining room occupies the former KAS Bank hall inside the W Hotel, and the kitchen draws on Southern French and Italian cooking.
The house calls its style Nouveau-Niçoise, built on flavours from Southern France and Italy. Cooking happens in a custom-made Molteni kitchen, and the menu runs from Fruits de Mer platters to rotisserie and grill dishes. Gault&Millau awarded the restaurant 14 points for 2026, but reviewers note that seasoning and balance vary from plate to plate.
Beef tartare, rosti with parmesan aioli and truffle, and sea bass carpaccio in olive oil appear again and again in reviews. Hand-crafted pasta with braised short rib and sautéed prawns in champagne butter sauce round out the Italian side of the menu. Desserts can finish at the table, including ice cream coupes and a dish prepared with liquid nitrogen.
The hall has high ceilings, stained glass, marble and gold, with plenty of Art Deco detail. The marble bar serves punches and aperitifs in the spirit of the 1920s and 1930s. Afternoon tea takes place in the Tea Room, and dinner seatings are timed, with reviewers reporting a two-hour limit.
