The story
Rijsel, at Marcusstraat 52b in Amsterdam, runs a French kitchen with a Flemish wink and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026. The name is the Flemish word for Lille, and the food follows that northern French line.
Chef Iwan Driessen cooks French with Flemish accents, and the spit-roasted chicken is his long-running signature, crisp outside and tender within. The huzarenslaatje, a salad that brought him national recognition, is not leaving the menu. Everything else changes with the season, with fish, meat and vegetarian options at both starter and main stage. Vegan dining is not possible. Three courses à la carte come to 57 euros, wine not included.
The dining room sits in a former home economics school in Amsterdam-Oost. Gault&Millau gave Rijsel 14.5 points in 2026 and noted that the classroom has made way for an open kitchen you can watch from your table. The acoustics are lively, and regulars seem to like it that way. Pieter Smits and Stephanie Lücken host, and the wine list leans heavily French.
