The story
Alfredo is an Italian restaurant at Tunisstrasse 3 in Köln, beside the Cologne Opera, and it holds a 2026 Michelin Recommended distinction. The kitchen has been run since 1973 by the founder's family, and the menu is built on modern Italian cooking with a classic base.
Roberto Carturan took over the kitchen from his father, Alfredo Carturan, who opened the restaurant in 1973. Fish remains central to the menu. Regional cooking from Piedmont to Sicily, along with the simple farmhouse dishes of Tuscany, pushes him toward new combinations. Since 2000, the restaurant has imported its olive oils directly from Italy.
The menu changes often, and the current monthly list includes paccheri with octopus, risotto with tomato, and pappardelle with duck. Among the fish, the Venetian-style sole stands out. Rack of lamb "Alfredo" and a guinea fowl variation anchor the meat courses. Desserts are a cassata with caramel and a zabaglione with strawberries.
On Fridays, Carturan trained as an opera baritone and sings after the six-course dinner, accompanied on piano. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the restaurant 3 Kochlöffel in 2026, describing it as an institution of Italian cooking in Cologne. Guests who come for the music also get a full Italian dinner.
