The story
am kai is a seafood restaurant at Große Elbstraße 145 b-d in Hamburg's Altona district, with a Mediterranean-leaning kitchen that draws on Asian influences and sits on the Elbe waterfront. It holds a Michelin Recommended distinction for 2026.
The kitchen builds its menu around fish and shellfish, combining Mediterranean flavours with Asian touches. Rotgarnelen ceviche comes with green curry, habanero and crustacean stock. Skrei cod is steamed and served with truffled baby spinach, potato and horseradish. Oysters are offered gratinated with spinach and hollandaise, natural with balsamic shallots, or poached in buttermilk with chili. Meat eaters can order a 350 g dry-aged Entrecôte from Uruguay.
Large windows and a terrace face the Elbe, with views of the harbour and the Docklands. In its 2026 entry, the Schlemmer Atlas awards the restaurant 2.5 Kochlöffel and notes the views and the fish-focused menu. The house also hosts events, with the Glory Lounge seating up to 32, a Séparée for 40 to 80 guests, and the am kai Club for 100 to 400.
Guests often single out the Espresso Martini, and the aperitif list includes a Mango Margarita with tequila, mezcal and lime. For dessert, the am kai Tiramisu comes with Amarena cherry, pistachio and hazelnut, while the pear tarte tatin is served with ginger, salt caramel and tonka bean.
