The story
Das Esszimmer is a modern Italian restaurant at Hintergasse 38 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, and it received a Michelin recommendation in 2026. Owner and head chef Thomas Manthey cooks an Italian menu with international influences in a small dining room in the town centre.
Manthey started cooking and baking early, but he trained as a chef only at 27, in his home city of Cologne. He then spent several years as head chef in Vienna before opening the Esszimmer in Neustadt in 2017. The kitchen works in a modern Italian register. Sous chef Matthias Seitz has worked alongside him since 2018.
On Thursday evenings the kitchen serves a surprise tasting menu of five small courses, brought to the table, for 58.00 euros per person. A vegetarian version is always offered as well. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the restaurant 2.5 Kochlöffel for 2026 and describes homemade dishes such as pasta and focaccia, served à la carte or as a three- to five-course evening menu.
The dining room is small and sits in the town centre, and the restaurant also has outdoor seating. Service is described as friendly and attentive. Restaurant manager Florian Reiß recommends wine pairings matched to the menus.
