The story
Restaurant zum Bären in Limburg an der Lahn serves classic French and Mediterranean cooking at Bahnhofstraße 24 in Balduinstein. The restaurant of this family-run country hotel was listed as Michelin Recommended in 2026.
The kitchen works from fresh products and cooks regional dishes with French and Mediterranean touches. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded 2.5 Kochlöffel in 2026 and places the hotel on the Lahn, between the Taunus and the Westerwald. The menu mixes refined plates with traditional ones, so a Wiener Schnitzel with fried potatoes sits alongside scallops with dashi.
Among the starters are a salmon tartare with potato rösti and green sauce, and a pairing of carpaccio and grilled scallop with blood orange, fennel and pistachio. Glazed veal sweetbreads come with salsify purée and morel cream. Mains include Lofoten skrei with lemon-tarragon risotto, saddle of lamb with basil risotto and beets, and beef tenderloin with Belper Knolle. For those skipping fish and meat, there is breaded feta with sweet potato and spinach. Four-course surprise menus run on selected dates in 2026.
Guests sit by the tiled stove in the rustic "am Kachelofen" room. The "Bibliothek" is the more elegant choice, with wooden shelves and an antique book collection. In summer the Mediterranean terrace opens, and the Weinstube welcomes people for a glass of wine or beer in the afternoon.
The wine list is well stocked, with dessert wines such as Sherry Cream from Andalusia, a Brachetto d'Acqui from Piedmont and a Gewürztraminer Spätlese from Weingut Rebholz in the Pfalz. Sweet plates include crème brûlée of Tahiti vanilla with grapefruit sorbet, and mascarpone rice pudding with spiced cherries and cinnamon ice cream.
