The story

Essort Bern: Contemporary Cuisine in Kirchenfeld, 15 Gault&Millau Points

Essort in Bern, at Jubiläumstrasse 97 in the Kirchenfeld district, serves a contemporary menu that earned 15 points from Gault&Millau for 2026. The restaurant works with local, carefully chosen produce and keeps its plates focused on clear, natural flavors.

Cooking with restraint

Ben Jann leads the kitchen, and since July 2024 he and his wife Sara have run the restaurant together, with Sara managing the front of house. The menu is a four- to six-course tasting, and the house prefers crafted surprises to mainstream dishes. The Gault&Millau review singled out marinated scallop with cucumber and Thai basil sorbet, and Simmental Flat Iron steak with Ticino polenta.

The room and the table

The dining room occupies a former US embassy building, and the garden hosts summer dinners with live jazz. Themed wine dinners pair set menus with bottles from South Tyrol and Veneto. The cellar offers Swiss wines alongside selections from Europe's best regions.

Gault&Millau — 15

The Kirchenfeld district is one of Bern’s most upscale neighborhoods, and «Essort», located in the former US embassy, ranks among the city’s most distinguished restaurants. Since mid-2024, head chef Ben Jann and his wife Sara have been managing the front-of-house operations here, bringing both continuity and a refreshing new energy. This philosophy is especially apparent in the four- to six-course tasting menu, where it is clear that the kitchen favors skillfully crafted culinary surprises over mainstream fare. To begin, the marinated scallop and cucumber-thai basil sorbet were outstanding, followed by the confit butter trout with cauliflower and spinach on beurre blanc, which tasted excellent. For the main course, the tender Flat Iron steak from Simmental cattle stood out just as much as the lightly crisp Ticino polenta and the crunchy vegetable snippets. The finale featured expertly executed Nideltäfeli, accompanied by kalamansi, a champagne sorbet, and candied apple. Overall, a visit that is rewarding in every sense—deeply enjoyable, atmospherically rich, and entirely free of gastronomic gimmicks.
