The story

Restavracija Shambala in Ljubljana: Asian Cuisine at Križevniška 12

Restavracija Shambala serves Asian cuisine at Križevniška ulica 12 in central Ljubljana, and Gault&Millau scored it 13.5 in 2026. The restaurant is also listed as Recommended by the Michelin Guide that year.

Cooking style

The Gault&Millau report describes a kitchen built on fresh herbs, warm spices and layered sauces, not on loose imitations of Asian dishes. The menu runs from miso soups and spicy broths to wok dishes, pad thai, Japanese and Thai curries and Vietnamese rolls. Some plates are delicate and fresh, others deliberately hot. The kitchen also grills Black Angus beef with Asian marinades.

Dishes on the table

The red Thai curry is made with a house blend of herbs. Other plates include grilled sea bass with ginger and pak choi, and Black Angus beef marinated in lemongrass. Dessert is a chocolate soufflé with mango ice cream and coconut foam. Tasting menus are listed at 70 euros for five courses, 78.50 for six and 87 for seven.

Room and wine

The room is quiet and, according to one guest review quoted on the site, almost meditative. Outdoor seating is available. The house also pairs its Asian dishes with Slovenian wines, which the kitchen says work well with spicy and sweet-and-sour flavours.

Shambala is more than just a place to eat. It is a restaurant where a meal quickly turns into a journey. Fresh herbs, warm spices, colourful presentations, and layered flavour combinations define the experience from the very first bite. The kitchen focuses on Asian cuisine, but not on superficial interpretations. The dishes are thoughtfully composed: sometimes delicate and fresh, at other times bold and spicy. The menu is extensive, featuring miso soups, spicy broths, salads, wok dishes, pad thai, Japanese and Thai curries, and Vietnamese rolls. Each section of the menu highlights a different aspect of Asian cuisine, from freshness and heat to sweet-and-sour balance. Spices and sauces play a central role. They are not simply additions to a dish but key elements that shape its character and flavour. Meat lovers are equally well catered for. Selected cuts, including grilled Black Angus beef, are complemented by Asian-inspired marinades, sauces, and herbs that add depth and complexity. An interesting aspect of the experience is the pairing of Asian dishes with wine. At first glance, these flavours may seem difficult to match, but this is precisely where Slovenian wines can be surprisingly successful. When paired with spicy, fresh, or sweet-and-sour flavours, they create an engaging dialogue between the plate and the glass. At Shambala, Asia is not merely a theme on the menu. It is presented thoughtfully and with a clear sense of purpose.
