The story
Cellar Door is a wine bar at 1 Hereford St., Christchurch, where the European kitchen sits beside a wide wine list in the South Quad of the Arts Centre. The Wine Spectator gave it a Best of Award of Excellence in 2024, and the wine program is the first thing most guests notice.
Wine is poured by the taste, by the glass and by the bottle, with a large range of local and international labels, including Canterbury and New Zealand bottles. Each day brings more than a dozen curated flights of four 40ml tastes, arranged around grape variety, winemaking style or region. The flights are served at the table, and local craft beer, gin, whisky and low or no-alcohol options are also on offer.
The menu is built on classical accompaniments to wine, using fresh local ingredients that change with the season. The Cuisine Good Food Guide, which awarded a 1 Hat in 2026, singled out a merino lamb ragu with pappardelle, green olives and Pecorino Romano, followed by a dark chocolate tart with rhubarb and olive oil. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free diets can be accommodated, so mention them when you order.
