The story
Héroine, at Kipstraat 12 in Rotterdam, is a modern international restaurant in the south wing of Het Industriegebouw. Gault&Millau awarded it 14 points in 2026, and its five- or seven-course chef's menu is cooked in full view of the dining room.
Michael Schook co-founded Héroine with Eva Eekman and leads the kitchen. Reviewers describe his cooking as experimental, built on classical training but not bound to it. Dishes start from ingredients that look simple on the plate, and the balance between sweet, sour, salty and bitter comes up again and again in press write-ups. Vegetarian dishes are offered alongside the set menu, and the kitchen will adjust courses for allergies or diets if they are flagged at booking.
A recent review singled out langoustine with rhubarb and a robust shellfish foam as the high point of the middle of the meal. Picanha came grilled and also as a tartare with lava salt and black garlic. Earlier menus included cuttlefish with sea urchin and samphire, and an egg yolk cooked at 62 degrees, which the restaurant treats as a house signature. Sourdough arrives with butter and sumac and is refilled through the evening.
The room has a high industrial ceiling, a mezzanine and an open kitchen, and it feels more relaxed than formal. Guests can also sit at the bar for a cocktail, a glass of wine or oysters without committing to the full menu. Sommelier Dennis Koopman selects the pairings, though one reviewer noted that the pairing list can thin out when bottles run low. The large table on the mezzanine seats up to 14 for semi-private dinners.
