The story
De Portier is a French kitchen in Nijmegen, housed at Kelfkensbos 57, 6511 TB Nijmegen, in the city's former gatekeeper's house. Gault&Millau awarded it 14.5 points in 2026, and Lekker500 included it in its Top 500 the same year.
Peter Cardynaals, known in the kitchen as Pe, cooks artisanal French dishes with international and Eastern influences. The menu changes with the seasons. Dinner runs from four courses, lunch from two, and every menu has a vegetarian version.
Reviewers have described a wild sea bass tartare with smoked eel rillette, apple pearls and a spicy horseradish dressing. A veal main with chanterelles, carrots and rich veal jus has also drawn praise, and the dessert of red fruit, pistachio shortbread and rose sorbet closes the meal. The current printed menu lists trout with smoked eel and gherkin, plus a strawberry dessert with white chocolate, cherries and lavender, so the dishes you receive will follow the season.
The renovated interior mixes black metal with the original wooden ceiling beams, and the kitchen is open to the dining room. Francien Streng, who imports Austrian wines herself, selects pairings on request, and Austrian bottles feature heavily on the list. The restaurant also hosts private parties in a private room.
