The story
In den Doofpot is a French-leaning restaurant at Turfmarkt 9 in Leiden, and the Michelin Guide lists it as Recommended for 2026. The dining rooms occupy two merged 17th-century canal houses in the city centre, overlooking the Galgewater and a short walk from Leiden Centraal station.
Patrick Brugman has been chef de cuisine here since 2014 and leads a team of five cooks. His approach is innovative but restrained, built on a classic French base with respect for natural flavours. The menu changes monthly and draws on seasonal produce, some of it grown in the restaurant's own greenhouse.
A recent Lekker500 review singled out a guinea fowl main served three ways, with shio koji, cognac sauce and creamy sweet potato purée. Red mullet came with smoked tomato and a robust bisque, and dessert was a cucumber, dill and lime granita finished with gin and tonic. Guests choose a four- or five-course menu, and a wine pairing can be added.
The rooms keep green floorboards, a fireplace and mirrors, alongside contemporary art and leather table runners. Gault&Millau awarded the restaurant 15 points for 2026. The wine list is a strength, and host-sommelier Anton Verschelling guides guests through it.
