The story
Het Prentenkabinet at Kloksteeg 25 in Leiden serves French-Mediterranean food in a former rectory opposite the Pieterskerk. Gault&Millau gave it 12.5 points in 2026.
The old Pieterswijk building has black-and-white marble floors, fireplaces, high ceilings and chandeliers. Old prints hang through several dining rooms, which is how the place earned its museum comparisons. Martin van der Ham is the owner. In summer the inner courtyard and park terrace, set in the old university garden, take over. The terrace opens in April.
Head chef Marco Venmans cooks French-international dishes with regional products, and the kitchen serves gluten-free and lactose-free plates on request. Lekker500 reviewers have praised a lamb loin tataki with sesame cream and a grilled turbot with beurre blanc. The house specialty is the bouillabaisse, packed with sea bass, gamba, scallops and mussels and poured at the table from a teapot. Lekker500 placed the restaurant in its Top 500 again for 2026.
Beyond the à la carte list, there is a surprise menu of three or four courses and a five-dish Bites menu. Starters have included Irish oysters and a cold ajo blanco. Among the desserts are a piña colada creation with pineapple and chocolate, and a red fruit dessert with aspic and raspberry ice cream. The cheese board brings five cheeses with kletzenbrood and truffle honey.
