The story
Bistro Bord'o is a French kitchen at Apothekersdijk 2 in Leiden, where owner-chef Oscar Zitman cooks classical French recipes for a contemporary menu. Gault&Millau awarded it a score of 13 for 2026, and it sits on the historic canal street in the city centre.
The kitchen aims for elegant, pure dishes without frills, and reviewers say the flavour carries the meal. Zitman draws on French classics but keeps the plates simple and ingredient-led. The menu runs as a three- to six-course tasting, and à la carte dishes can be added to it.
Recent reviews mention a crayfish risotto amuse-bitterbal, a turbot fillet served with forest mushroom risotto and porcini bread, and a ray wing with grenobloise sauce and capers. Desserts have ranged from mandarin pickled in ginger with vanilla panna cotta to a course built around English Shropshire blue cheese. Lekker500 has listed the restaurant in its Top 500 in every edition from 2019 to 2026, and the lineup shifts with the seasons.
The dining room is compact, with wall sconces wrapped in impregnated sheer linen and an open kitchen. In warm weather, guests sit on the terrace by the door or across the way at the waterfront. Maike Zitman, hostess and sommelier, selects the wine list, which mixes sometimes unusual bottles with affordable wines by the glass. The couple also run De Wijnkelder, a wine shop stocking their own imported selections.
