The story
De Grote Frederik Bistro sits at Frederiksplein 7 in Groningen's Oosterpoortwijk and serves a seasonal bistro tasting menu. The Michelin Guide listed it as Recommended in 2026.
Arnejan and Marjon Kruithof have run the bistro since 2018, after several years in Freiburg im Breisgau. Arnejan cooks alone in the kitchen, without staff, and favours seasonal produce without fuss. Marjon looks after the room and the wine. Gault&Millau scored the kitchen 13 in 2026, and the restaurant was recently renovated so the two of them could host a full evening on their own.
The format is a fixed four-course menu at €80, with two amuses and bread and butter before the first course. The summer card opened with yellowfin mackerel, glass noodles, mint and a wasabi hollandaise. Confit duck followed, with carrot, anise bread and an orange jus. The autumn version offered turbot with chicory, anchovy and saffron beurre blanc, then pheasant with schupfnudeln and red beet. Desserts are fruit-led, such as peach with lemon and elderflower sorbet. An extra dish (€16) and a cheese trolley (€18) are optional.
The pairing covers four glasses, at €36 with alcohol or €24 alcohol-free. Dinner usually runs two and a half to three hours. Private dining is available on Wednesdays and Sundays.
