The story
Vive la Vie is a modern French restaurant at Oosterstraat 39 in Groningen, and Gault&Millau scored it 14.5 in 2026. The kitchen works without a fixed card, so the surprise tasting menu changes with the season and the day's deliveries.
Owner and chef Jeroen Sportel cooks within the French tradition, but his travels to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Cuba show on the plate. Lekker500 described a classic foundation with Eastern accents. Ingredients are chosen fresh each day, and the kitchen adapts to what arrives.
Guests pick between four and seven courses. The amuse-bouches arrive as small plated works: bapao with Eastern spices, nori-wrapped eggplant with yuzu pearls, and a paper-thin tartelette with tom kha kai. Later courses have included yellowtail kingfish with garden peas and lime granité, and sirloin with black garlic foam and lardo. A vegetarian course of oak mushrooms with ponzu foam and cauliflower cream carries the same mix of technique and Asian flavors.
The former bakery has rough brick walls, a good deal of art, and an open kitchen at the back that gives the room its energy. Lara Sportel leads the front of house as hostess and sommelier, and the wine list leans toward European labels, with pairings available. Reviewers have noted that acoustics can be lively when the room is full.
