The story
Bij Jef sits at Herenstraat 34 in Den Hoorn on Texel, where chef Jef Schuur runs a modern Dutch kitchen that earned one Michelin star in 2026. The restaurant occupies a former parsonage in the village centre, and the cooking follows the island's seasons closely.
Jef Schuur works with fish, shellfish and Texel lamb from the Wadden Sea and North Sea, alongside vegetables and herbs from the restaurant's own garden. The menu changes daily, so the plate reflects what arrived that week. Gault&Millau awarded the restaurant 17 points in 2026, citing the finest local ingredients and a cooking style that suits the island.
Recent menu listings include horse mackerel with dill, coconut and kohlrabi, and Wadden oyster with young sheep's cheese and palm cabbage leaf. Sea bass arrives with Wadden cockles, lamb and sauerkraut, and Texel asparagus appears with parsley root and oyster leaf. Dessert returns to the island in a dish of Texel honey, almond and verbena.
The dining room is light and open, with abstract art on the walls. Sommelier Nadine Mögling builds the wine pairings and favours European producers, often small organic makers. Twelve suites sit behind the restaurant for guests who would rather stay the night, and breakfast is prepared by Jef.
