Lekker500 — Top 500

Located at Hoofddorpplein in Amsterdam-Zuid is Café Maurits: a warm, cozy neighborhood restaurant where good food and drink take center stage. The interior is inviting and homely, featuring plenty of wood and displayed wine bottles. The atmosphere is relaxed, as if you're sitting down with friends; locals enjoy casual pre-dinner drinks here. The menu is compact but thoughtful, featuring surprising bar bites. We start with delicious cheese puffs, filled with mature cheese custard and a perfectly tangy pickle gel. This is followed by a duck sausage, essentially a luxury sausage roll, served with orange cream and endive salad. Playful and well-balanced. The ribeye with Bordelaise sauce is juicy and rich in flavor, especially thanks to the deep, robust sauce. The Rione del Falco we order alongside it pairs excellently. The potato mousseline we ordered as a side is silky smooth. However, the dish feels a bit bare without vegetables or salad, a minor drawback. The dessert of white chocolate ganache with strawberries and pink peppercorn ice cream, newly added to the menu, is a delightful surprise and a beautifully thought-out dish. The ice cream adds an exciting, fresh twist. The Weijl brothers, Vincent and Thomas, who run the restaurant, make all the difference with their laid-back attitude and extensive wine knowledge. They offer tastings, provide thoughtful recommendations, and make your visit personal and enjoyable. Café Maurits offers French cuisine without pretension, but with quality. A lovely place you'll gladly return to.

Lekker500 — Top 500

Maurits, named after the grandfather of the owners, brothers Vincent and Tomas Weijl, is the kind of establishment you'd wish for in any neighborhood. A pleasant dining spot, but also a great place for drinks. In 2023, the corner building in Amsterdam-Zuid was completely renovated and opened. Lots of wood, large mirrors, and atmospheric lighting. In summer, it's a pleasure to relax on the terrace right outside. You can simply drop in for some snacks, a glass of wine, or a cocktail. The clientele is young and hip. The menu features both à la carte options and a three-course menu at reasonable prices. The wines on the extensive and solidly priced wine list are predominantly French, encompassing both natural and conventional selections. Chef Boy van Rijn's cooking style is pure, with fresh flavors taking center stage. French culinary techniques have been given a modern twist and infused with international influences. From the open kitchen come creative dishes such as crab with radish, jalapeño, cucumber dressing, and calamansi pearls. The tomato dish with nashi pear, watermelon, ricotta cream, and sesame crispbread boasts a colorful presentation and tastes excellent. The Collio Bianco 2019 Due del Monte from Italy pairs beautifully. Next up is duck breast with a carrot tandoori cream, chipotle, and dill jus. Service provided by both brothers, Vincent and Tomas, is extremely relaxed, and they both offer excellent recommendations. Welcome to Lekker.
