The story
Marie is a classic French brasserie at Nieuwe Doelenstraat 2-14 in Amsterdam, on the Amstel inside Hotel L'Europe. The Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026 recognises its good quality, good value cooking.
The kitchen follows the tradition of Parisian bistros and brasseries, with timeless French dishes and seasonal ingredients. Gault&Millau awards it 13 points for refined French plates prepared with care and finesse. The menu changes with the season, so the dishes on a given visit may differ from those listed online.
Oysters are served in several styles, including Irish oysters with caviar. Steak tartare comes with mizuna and can be finished with Perle Imperiale caviar. The côte de boeuf, around 600 grams, is meant for sharing, served with béarnaise and frites. A visiting critic also praised the vol-au-vent filled with Belper Knolle, eggplant and celery root under a Comté sauce.
The room has a herringbone parquet floor, classical artwork and an art deco stained glass panel in the ceiling. Tables overlook the Amstel, and the terrace opens in sunnier months. Marie sur l'Eau, the riverside bar, serves French wine and hors d'oeuvres, plus afternoon tea on weekends and in good weather. The historic wine cellar, established in 1915, holds more than 1,250 labels and hosts tastings Wednesday to Saturday by reservation.
