The story
Al Covo is a seafood and Venetian kitchen at Campiello della Pescaria, sestiere Castello 3968, Venice, and it received a Michelin Recommended listing in 2026. The house website says the Benelli family, who still run it, opened the restaurant in 1987 in a former early-twentieth-century osteria.
ilGolosario Ristoranti gave the restaurant its Faccino Contento ++ rating for 2026, and its reviewer points to the cooking of Cesare, who pays close attention to seasonal local produce. The kitchen says it favors small producers from the lagoon islands, the coast and the Venetian hinterland, along with Slow Food Presidi. Some vegetables come from Osti in Orto, a project of thirteen Venetian restaurateurs growing produce on Sant'Erasmo. Pasta and sweets are made with stone-ground organic flour.
The most cited plates are a raw fish and shellfish appetizer from the Upper Adriatic and tagliolini with pure spider crab and its coral. A mixed fry of fish comes with polenta and fried artichoke hearts. For dessert, Diane's buffalo ricotta cheesecake arrives with blueberry sauce. Menu items change with the market, so some dishes appear only on certain days.
The dining rooms are small and intimate, and the walls hold original artworks by painters including Filippo De Pisis, Virgilio Guidi and Luigi Divari. The water glasses are hand-blown in Murano by Diego Vio. The wine list, curated by Cesare's son Lorenzo, focuses on natural and artisanal bottles, many from growers the team knows personally. There is outdoor seating when weather allows.
