The story
ESS ATELIER Strauss is the fine dining restaurant of the Alpin Lifestyle Hotel Löwen & Strauss at Kirchstraße 1 in Oberstdorf, where the modern cuisine earned one Michelin star in 2026. The kitchen sits inside a small lifestyle hotel in the town centre, so guests can walk over from their rooms.
Peter A. Strauss runs the restaurant as chef de cuisine, director and owner, a post he has held since 2011. He trained at the Hotel Sonnenalp from the age of fifteen, then cooked in kitchens in St. Moritz, Munich and Jamaica before returning to the Allgäu. The restaurant is a member of the Jeunes Restaurateurs d'Europe.
Der Feinschmecker describes the evening as an international surprise menu of ten courses. It opens with an Asian spice soup and moves to Glen Douglas salmon from Scotland, served with beetroot hummus and a vegetarian foie gras. The meal closes with venison loin from Oberstdorf, paired with beech mushrooms, edamame and pepper pear.
Alpine motifs decorate the dining room, and cowbells hang from the ceiling. A six-metre communal table, called the Älpler table, seats up to 20 guests and encourages conversation between courses. Wine climate cabinets stand in the rooms, which are designed in a casually chic alpine style.
