The story
Schlegelhof, in Freiburg at Höfener Straße 92 in Kirchzarten, is a classic cuisine restaurant with Mediterranean leanings and a Michelin Recommended listing for 2026. The house sits among meadows and forest, with views toward the Black Forest mountains, just outside Kirchzarten.
Martin Schlegel and his team cook traditional Baden dishes the old way, and they also reach for unusual spices and herbs. The menu moves between regional classics, international plates and Mediterranean cooking. Ingredients are chosen for quality and freshness, and the kitchen aims for a plain, balanced style that lets the produce carry the dish.
The restaurant, the guest rooms and the spa share the same material palette: Zirbe (stone pine), fir, ash and maple in the furniture and walls, set against glass, natural stone and stainless steel. Marianne Schlegel brought an old barn from Vorarlberg, dismantled and rebuilt on the site. The Schlemmer Atlas describes the setting as modern countryside, with a veranda and a nature garden, and rates the restaurant 2.5 Kochlöffel for 2026.
Martin Schlegel's wine list holds about 700 bottles from around the world, with a strong showing from Baden. Champagne, Crémant and German whites sit alongside the Burgundy-style and Chardonnay bottlings from local estates. The list earned a German Wine List Award in 2024, and his sister, a sommelier and wine manager, works on the same passion.
