The story
Gasthaus zum Raben sits at Dorfstraße 8 in Horben, a village just outside Freiburg, where a French kitchen meets the Black Forest. The Michelin Recommended listing for 2026 places it among the region's noted tables for French cooking.
Pierre Barrel, with roots in Brittany, leads the kitchen. He previously cooked at the Vendôme under Joachim Wissler and was head chef at the Alte Post in Müllheim from 2021 to 2023. The Schlemmer Atlas awarded the four- or six-course Carte Blanche three Kochlöffel for 2026. Menus change with the seasons, and vegetarian and pescetarian versions are available on request.
The bistro keeps a short French menu with steak tartare and bouillabaisse on the list, all made in house. Recent specials have included a Salade Niçoise and a lemon tart. Seafood platters appear at certain times of the year.
The inn traces its roots to 1604, and the current building dates from 1805. It was a meeting point for Freiburg students before a renovation in 2001. Five double rooms with panoramic views make it possible to stay overnight, and the Horben Rathaus bus stop is about 150 metres away.
