The story
Gasthaus Sonne in Freiburg (Freiburger Straße 4, Vörstetten) serves Badische cooking in a house that has stayed in the same family for more than 250 years. The Michelin Guide listed it as Recommended in 2026.
Venison ragout with cranberries, homemade Spätzle and apple red cabbage is the plate the Schlemmer Atlas highlighted when it awarded 1.5 Kochlöffel in 2026. The rest of the mains stay close to home: Badische Ochsenbrust with horseradish sauce, Badischer Sauerbraten, and Zwiebelrostbraten with Brägele. A contemporary line runs through the vegetarian dishes, such as spinach risotto with wild mushrooms or an herb crêpe with feta béchamel.
Finish with chocolate mousse and pickled wild berries, or crème brûlée with mango sorbet. A pear sorbet with Williams Christ is on the list for those who prefer something cleaner.
In cooler months the tiled stove warms the dining rooms, which seat anything from a table for two to a party of 60. Once the weather turns, tables move out to the garden under a large chestnut tree. The house also has 12 individually furnished guest rooms.
Ulrike and Elisabeth Stahl run the Sonne today, looking after kitchen and cellar themselves. Feinschmecker and Geo Saison have both written about their work.
