The story
Dunkelrestaurant Finster at Steinhausenstr. 26 in Essen serves world cuisine in complete darkness. The Schlemmer Atlas gave it 1,5 Kochlöffel in 2026.
The restaurant has run its "Dinner in the Dark" since 7 June 2007 and calls itself the first dark restaurant in the Ruhr region. Blind or severely visually impaired waiters lead guests to the table and stay for conversation through the evening. The team page names Bruno and Yunus as blind, and Cengiz and Pedro as severely visually impaired. The house counts well over 200,000 guests so far.
Guests choose from seven menus: game, Italian (without seafood), vegetarian, beef, fish, poultry and vegan. A children's menu is also available. The descriptions stay deliberately vague, because working out the ingredients by taste is part of the evening. Each menu comes in three or four courses. The vegetarian and vegan menus cost 39,90 € for three courses and 43,90 € for four. Game and beef are 51,90 € and 55,90 €. Meat and fish appear only as fillet, and the kitchen can prepare any menu lactose-free or gluten-free.
The restaurant has two air-conditioned dark rooms, different in size and sound. Guests see neither room before they sit down, and they do not learn what is on the plate in advance. The Schlemmer Atlas puts it plainly: eating in total darkness without knowing exactly what you are served is a sensory experience in its own right.
