The story
Weinstube zum Engel in Baden-Baden cooks Mediterranean and seasonal dishes at Mauerbergstraße 62, and the Michelin Guide gave it a Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good-quality, good-value cooking. The wine bar draws its wines largely from the Baden-Baden vineyards.
The house describes its kitchen as honest, fresh cooking made with care. The starters show that range: a warm goat's cheese tart with fennel and radicchio sits beside a house-made spring roll with Korean fried chicken and red cabbage salad. Mains follow the same pattern, with a bit of everything from fish to veal.
Roasted dorade and octopus comes with pointed cabbage, tempura broccoli, gnocchi and a Riesling foam. The braised ox cheek is served with carrot and kohlrabi, potato gratin and a Spätburgunder jus. The vegetarian gnocchi arrives with dashi butter and the same tempura broccoli.
The wine list leans heavily on Baden producers, with several Riesling bottlings from Neuweier. The Schlemmer Atlas describes a cozy pub in modernized historic premises, where a quarter-litre glass of local wine is still the traditional order. Guests can sit at the dining room or at the regulars' table, and the house also offers outdoor seating.
