The story
Nonbe Daigaku is a Japanese restaurant at avenue Adolphe Buyl 31 in Ixelles, Brussels, and it earned a Gault&Millau score of 15 in 2026. Its sushi counter sits at the center of a ground-floor room.
Yosuke Suetsugu, close to 75, still works the sushi counter. Gault&Millau credits his disciplined hands and counts the restaurant among the favorite spots for authentic Japanese cooking. Le Fooding calls it the most authentic sushi experience in the capital.
The decor is understated, fitted out in Japanese style inside a typical Brussels terraced building. One meal Le Fooding described began with raw mackerel in sesame sauce, then a chawanmushi, a steamed egg custard hiding grilled eel, scampi and fresh peas. Sushi followed, including a fatty tuna piece and gunkan topped with salmon roe. The service is warm, and the meal invites a longer stay.
