The story
Bern's Steak House, a Tampa steakhouse at 1208 S. Howard Ave., has been recognised in the Michelin Recommended selection for 2026. The restaurant traces its beginnings to 1956, when Bern and Gert Laxer took over the Beer Haven on Howard Avenue, and its seafood and steakhouse menu still carries that founding spirit.
Prime steaks are cut to order and dry-aged in house for five to eight weeks, then charbroiled over natural hardwood lump charcoal. The raw bar offers oysters and escargot alongside 22 caviars. Chef Chad Johnson leads the kitchen as executive chef, with Brent Hunt as chef de cuisine.
The cellar holds more than half a million bottles and 6,500 labels, with over 150 wines by the glass each night. The Harry Waugh Dessert Room, built in 1985 from redwood wine casks, serves nearly 45 desserts, including house ice creams and sorbets in 15 flavors.
