The story

Spruce, San Francisco: Contemporary Californian Dining on Sacramento Street

Spruce serves contemporary Californian cooking at 3640 Sacramento Street in San Francisco, and it holds a AAA Four Diamond rating for 2026.

Chef Mark Sullivan and the farm

Chef Mark Sullivan cooks hyper-seasonal, California-inspired food. The menu has included Early Girl tomato soup with parmesan croutons and spiced 38 North duck breast with marble potatoes and figs. Around 80 percent of the produce comes from SMIP Ranch, a private five-acre farm in the hills above Woodside.

A wine list with its own chapters

The list runs past 3,500 selections. Some pages are devoted to a single grape from a single country, such as riesling from Germany. Wine Spectator gave Spruce its Grand Award (2015), and the restaurant has been open since 2007.
