The story
Anomaly SF serves contemporary Californian cooking with Southern roots at 2600 Sutter St. in San Francisco, and the Michelin Guide listed it as Recommended in 2026. Chef Mike Lanham calls his style "Southern-Inspired Modernism," a label the restaurant treats as its own category.
Lanham left competitive cycling at 24 and moved into the kitchen. He did not grow up cooking, so he judges food by flavor rather than inherited rules. His stated aim is to push a dish right up to the point where it becomes less appealing, then step back about 3 mm. Some of the seasonal ingredients are foraged by the chef himself.
Dinner is a single eleven-course tasting menu built on vegetables, with vegetarian and vegan versions planned alongside each dish when guests give advance notice. The Michelin Guide singled out an emoji-inspired egg bite and a trio of fennel preparations. The menu changes often with the season.
A 400-square-foot open kitchen sits in view of the dining room, and several courses are finished at the table. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairings are offered with the menu, and the wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2024. Service runs Tuesday to Saturday evenings.
