The story
Lazy Bear is a modern American restaurant at 3416 19th St. in San Francisco, holding two Michelin stars (2026). Its American kitchen runs a tasting menu in the spirit of a shared dinner party, with guests seated around a table.
Lazy Bear started in 2009 as an underground restaurant in Chef David Barzelay's apartment, after he left his job as a lawyer. He named the dinners after an anagram of his last name. The restaurant moved to its current Mission District home in 2014, and it earned its first Michelin star in its first year of eligibility, followed by a second star the next year.
The menu is modern American food shaped by the wild and by nostalgia, using a range of preservation methods and inventive techniques. Barzelay was named a Best New Chef by Food & Wine in 2016. The wine list holds more than 2,000 selections, with a particular depth in mature California vintages, and it earned a Wine Spectator Grand Award in 2024.
