The story
Benu, at 22 Hawthorne Street in San Francisco, is a contemporary Asian restaurant that holds Michelin 3 Star (2026). The kitchen serves a tasting menu shaped by Asian flavors and carefully sourced ingredients, in a room built for an unhurried evening.
Chef Lee was born in South Korea and moved to the United States as a young child. He is a disciple of Thomas Keller and oversaw Keller's kitchens for nine years. The precision shows in small details, from the placement of the water glass to the lacquered skin of barbecued quail. The World's 50 Best Restaurants ranked Benu 28th in 2021.
First-time guests receive more than 12 courses, including mussels stuffed with glass noodles and fine vegetables, and chicken wing filled with abalone. Returning diners get new dishes of similar care. Each plate has its own serving piece, many made by a Korean artisan. Warm bread arrives wrapped in linen, and a ground-acorn quesadilla with Iberico ham and black truffle sits on a smooth black stone.
Benu is private rather than see-and-be-seen. The atmosphere feels posh and exclusive, closer to an intimate dining room in a modern art museum than a busy dining floor.
