The story
Atelier Crenn, at 3127 Fillmore Street in San Francisco, is a modern French restaurant that holds three Michelin stars (2026). Chef Dominique Crenn built the room around her own cooking, and the tasting menu is the only way to eat here.
Crenn opened the restaurant as a place to express her heritage. Atelier Crenn earned its first Michelin star in October 2011, and in November 2018 she became the first female chef in the US to hold three Michelin stars. The cooking draws on classical French technique and on the seafood and produce she knows well.
Crenn spent many summers in Brittany, and the menu leans toward the sea. Fishermen and small purveyors supply much of the fish. A vegetable-forward menu is available for guests who cannot eat the full pescatarian menu. Produce comes partly from Bleu Belle Farm in Sonoma, which the team farms with regenerative methods. The restaurant is also certified as a plastic-free establishment.
Juan Contreras, the chef pâtissier, opened the restaurant with Crenn in 2011. His desserts aim to bring back memories through flowers, aromas and the textures of nature. Brioche is made with butter from San Martin Milk Company, and the table butter comes from Animal Farm Creamery. Contreras was a James Beard Award finalist for Outstanding Pastry Chef in 2019 and 2020.
