The story
Essential by Christophe, at 103 W. 77th St. in New York City, is a modern French restaurant on the Upper West Side that earned one Michelin star in 2026. The kitchen works with seasonal tasting menus and a wine list that reflects the same French technique found on the plate.
Chef Bellanca has cooked for more than 35 years, and his menus favor restraint and precision. Seasonal ingredients come through clean French technique, with house-made sauces carrying much of the depth. The wine list has also earned a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence (2025).
The four-course prix fixe moves from Hokkaido uni with sora pickles to black bass braised with artichoke and manila clams. Desserts include La Tarte au Chocolat, served warm with roasted vanilla ice cream. The private dining room seats up to 18 guests and was designed by Parisian interior designer Caroline Egasse.
