The story
Barolo Grill, at 3030 East Sixth Avenue in Denver, is a Northern Italian restaurant that received the Wine Spectator Grand Award in 2018. The kitchen cooks Piedmontese dishes, and the cellar is the restaurant's best-known feature.
Executive chef Darrel Truett leads a kitchen that describes its food as hand-crafted modern Piemontese cuisine. Menus change with the seasons and use ingredients from regional farms and artisans, so a dish you order in July may not appear again in winter. The Michelin Guide listed Barolo Grill as Recommended in 2026.
Every July, the whole staff travels to Italy, a tradition that began in 1995. Owner Ryan Fletter was on the first trip as a staff member and has continued it since buying the restaurant in 2015. Servers and the sommelier can describe wines they have tasted with the winemakers, and the list favors small family wineries that farm and make wine with an eye toward the environment. Wine dinners bring producers to the dining room, such as a four-course evening with Allegrini that cost $250 all-inclusive.
