The story
Circa 1886 is an American restaurant at 149 Wentworth St., Charleston, South Carolina, cooking seasonal Lowcountry ingredients in the original carriage house of the Wentworth Mansion. Wine Spectator gave it a Best of Award of Excellence in 2020, and AAA awarded it Four Diamond in 2026.
Executive Chef Marc Collins has run the kitchen since 2001. He brings a modern approach to Lowcountry traditions, and the menu changes with what local farms and regional purveyors supply through the year. The result is Southern cooking with contemporary technique.
Guests can choose one of two six-course tasting menus, the Ashley or the Cooper, or order from the à la carte list. The room sits under soft candlelight and keeps original architectural details from the 1886 building. Pastry chef Ashley Cardona was named Pastry Chef of the Year by the South Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association in 2025.
The wine list is extensive, and guests can pair a glass or a full wine flight with either tasting menu. The restaurant also hosts intimate wine dinners and wine and cocktail classes. Private celebrations, from anniversaries to rehearsal dinners, are a regular part of the calendar.
