The story
Skosh, at 96-98 Micklegate in York, is an Asian fusion and modern British small plates restaurant that holds a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. Chef-owner Neil Bentinck opened the original room in 2016, just beyond the Micklegate Bar gateway.
The name comes from the Japanese word sukoshi, meaning small, and the kitchen sends out around 25 small plates. Booking ahead is sensible, since the restaurant has a loyal following in York. The hen's egg has been on the menu since day one: a ceramic eggshell holds a Summerfield's cheese mousse, and digging deeper reveals egg yolk, crunchy crumbs, leeks, black vinegar and sweet sherry. The ingredients change from time to time.
The room has grey and yellow walls, hand-thrown crockery and wooden tables, with stools at the chef's table facing the open kitchen. A private dining room seats up to 12. The drinks list covers seasonal cocktails, craft beers and a global wine list, with every bottle available by the glass.
