The story
Barbican Kitchen is a modern British restaurant in Plymouth, housed in the Plymouth Gin Distillery at 60 Southside Street, PL1 2LQ. The Good Food Guide named it a Local Gem for 2026.
Chris and James Tanner opened the kitchen in April 2006 with a simple aim: fresh local food at a realistic price. The menu draws on Westcountry meat, vegetables and fish from a network of regional suppliers. The kitchen also cooks an international range, and its sample menus favour seasonal produce.
The Good Food Guide highlighted grilled mackerel fillet with a Peruvian green sauce, pork belly with crisp crackling served over apple purée and creamy mash, and a crème brûlée. The AA has awarded the kitchen two rosettes for 2026. Wines come by the glass, carafe or bottle, drawn from a global list.
The restaurant sits inside the distillery, where the guide describes walls cast in ancient stone. Parties of up to 24 can book the private dining room for celebrations or business meetings, and menus can be built around the group. Wheelchair access is available through the lift, and diners are asked to flag any access needs in advance so tables can be allocated.
