The story
Smoke & Salt is a Modern British restaurant at 115 Tooting High Street, London, recommended by the Michelin Guide in 2026. It began in a shipping container at POP Brixton before settling into its permanent Tooting home.
A crowdfunding campaign paid for the move, and the donors' names are inscribed on fermentation jars along one side of the room. Slate walls and exposed brickwork frame the open kitchen, where heat, flames and smoke set the pace. The Good Food Guide rated the restaurant Good in 2026.
The name explains the cooking. Snacks have included sweetcorn grilled hard and served with a salty miso dip, and cauliflower nuggets in smoked chilli salt with aïoli. A 12-hour smoked pork chop comes with an apple, sweetcorn and seaweed jam. The seasonal Culture tasting menu might add kimchi pancake with Kewpie, chalkstream trout with basil and berries, or piri-piri sirloin with chipotle. A shorter Craft menu is served in the early evening, and vegetarian, pescetarian and vegan versions are available.
The wine list is short and sourced where possible from progressive producers. Cocktails take the same smoke and salt theme. Dessert could be English plums with hazelnut frangipane or a coconut rum baba.
