The story
Holy Carrot, at 156 Portobello Road in Notting Hill, London, runs a vegetable-forward kitchen built on live fire and fermentation, and it earned a Michelin Recommended distinction in 2026. The menu is fully plant-based, with no meat substitutes, and the cooking follows what the growers bring in.
Executive Chef Daniel Watkins was brought up vegetarian and previously cooked over fire at Dalston's ACME Fire Cult, which he co-founded with Andrew Clarke in 2021. Vegetables go straight onto the coals. A fermentation lab turns kitchen by-products into new ingredients, which keeps the kitchen close to zero waste.
The Good Food Guide, which rates the restaurant Good for 2026, picked out roasted leeks with aji romesco and beetroot with blueberry and pine nuts. A crispy mushroom "wing" arrives with a fiery ahi buffalo hot sauce. At lunchtime the chips are some of the best in London, according to the guide. Desserts are free from refined sugar, including a chocolate tahini crémeux and a cashew and almond soft serve with koi honey and fennel pollen.
