The Seahorse

‘There is some magical alchemy at work in this little corner of Dartmouth,’ notes one reporter, adding that the family-owned Seahorse delivers ‘seafood at its absolute best’. On the Dartmouth quayside, the restaurant is helmed by Mitch Tonks’ son Ben, who is maintaining its high standards and commitment to daily deliveries of locally sourced produce (especially fish). The Seahorse has always radiated a balmy sense of Mediterranean good cheer, and the cooking follows suit. Charcoal-roasted Torbay scallops with white port are never off the menu, and sunny flavours permeate the repertoire from fritto misto di mare to whole John Dory with Sicilian tomatoes and Leccino olives. There are lamb cutlets ‘alla milanese’ and chargrilled calf’s liver with polenta if you’re not in the maritime mood, while desserts maintain the theme of elegant simplicity – perhaps poached fruit with mascarpone and grappa. The fixed-price lunchtime ‘menu del giorno’ offers excellent value, while Ben Tonks’ monthly ‘open table’ gatherings in the private dining room (aka the Cantina) are a local hit. An excellent Eurocentric wine list does justice to the food.

Step through Joe's Bar, named after one of The Seahorse's first guests and friend of founder Mitch Tonks, and you'll enter the bright and convivial dining room that has been a welcome staple of Dartmouth's eating out scene since 2008. Mitch Tonks' love of food, fishing, and hospitality has always been the heart of The Seahorse, and these days that same spirit shines through his son Ben. As Chef Patron, Ben has taken up the reins of the restaurant his father built with co-founder Mat Prowse, carrying it forward with his own passion and warmth while Mitch remains close at hand, a guiding presence in the background. It's a gentle passing of the baton between generations, and one that has kept The Seahorse beloved of people in the West Country and beyond since 2008. In 2022 Mitch passed the reigns to his son, Ben, with the support of his wife Bronte. The pair have maintained the cordiality of the restaurant, where you'll typically find groups of people tucking into a second or even third bottle of wine as the infectious ambience of the room takes over. The restaurant's menu continues to be underpinned by a love of Italian food but also of fresh fish, delivered daily from nearby Brixham Fish Market, and a passion for grilling over flame. Dishes are simply prepared to let the freshness of the ingredients shine through, with waiters proudly showing off the day's catch to diners to help them with their choice of specialities. Between services, the team comes together for family dinner around the table, a tradition that shows hospitality starts at home and with the team. It's an approach that has kept the waterside restaurant on the top of its game for almost a decade and a half. Cheers to that.
