The story
Restaurant 22 holds one Michelin Star (2026) for its modern British cooking at 22 Chesterton Road, Cambridge. Sam Carter and Alex Olivier have run this Victorian townhouse since 2018.
Carter trained at Hambleton Hall and Maze by Gordon Ramsay. His menu follows what Cambridgeshire suppliers deliver each day, so it changes often. Lunch and dinner are built around a short tasting menu (£115) and a full one (£150), and the whole table takes the same menu. Olivier runs the front of house. The kitchen also holds three AA Rosettes.
Gougères with aged Parmesan and black garlic honey have opened the meal in the Good Food Guide's account. Yorkshire wagyu is braised for 48 hours and served with a puff of beef tendon and a bone-marrow consommé. Anjou squab arrives in two parts: pigeon-liver parfait in a croustade, then the breast and confit leg. A toffee-apple dessert of torched Swiss meringue, bay-leaf parfait and Bramley compôte closes the meal.
Only 22 covers fit in the house, which backs onto the River Cam and Jesus Green. Stained glass dating to 1892 sits in the brickwork, and the dining rooms are candlelit in the evening. Drinks flights run alongside both menus, including a non-alcoholic one, and lead sommelier Bethany Pogson selects the wine list. Many of the cordials, juices and infusions are made in-house.
