The story
Rowan is a modern British restaurant at Rothay Bridge, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0EH, and it holds three AA Rosettes for 2026. The modern European cooking sits inside a Grade II listed Regency hotel, and the Michelin Recommended listing for 2026 adds to its standing.
A three-course carte replaces the tasting menus common in Lakeland dining rooms. Japanese technique shows in lobster tail with bisque and carrot petals carved fine. Asian and Scandinavian notes appear too, in suckling pig with turnip and umeboshi and venison tartare with swede and rye.
The room is wood-panelled, with the terrace and garden visible through full-length windows in summer. One visit found tables set far apart and service slow between courses on a dark night. Summer evenings are likely the better time to eat here.
