The story
The Walnut Tree, at Llanddewi Skirrid, Abergavenny, NP7 8AW, holds a Michelin star for 2026. The modern British kitchen, with French and Italian threads, has been in Shaun Hill's hands since 2008.
This inn has drawn ambitious diners since the 1960s, when Franco Taruschio ran it. Hill brings roughly fifty years of experience to a style rooted in classical technique. The AA confirmed three Rosettes for culinary excellence in 2026. Flavours stay forthright and easy to read.
A starter of venison faggot comes with Roscoff onion purée. The brodetto follows the Adriatic fish casserole tradition. Beetroot-cured salmon arrives with pickled cucumber and horseradish cream, and veal sweetbread sits beside lamb's kidneys on mash with grain mustard sauce. The plant-based main is a cauliflower steak with pine nuts, golden raisins and romesco. For dessert there is chocolate Paris-Brest with praline ice cream, or orange and almond cake with mascarpone and bergamot ice cream.
The Walnut Tree is a low-slung, two-storey village inn a couple of miles east of Abergavenny. Quality artworks are refreshed regularly, and the mood is quiet, with attention left for the plate. The wine list favours small growers and original flavours, with a good showing of half-bottles for those who like to explore.
