The story
Bistrot du Lion d'Or serves Classic French cooking at Rue Ancienne 53 in Carouge, Genève, and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026. The bistro has occupied the same address since the 18th century.
Notary records from the early 1700s already mention the Lion d'Or inn, when Carouge was still a small hamlet under the Duchy of Savoy. The population grew tenfold between 1772 and 1792, and it was during that period that the café moved to number 53. It never left, which makes it one of the oldest bistros in Carouge.
Romain Desvenain comes from the Toulouse region. He spent two years with Michel Guérard in Eugénie-les-Bains and worked at Whatley Manor in England under Martin Burg. He then cooked for six years at the Bolero bistro in Versoix before opening here. Gault&Millau gave him 15 points in 2026 for refined, generously portioned French cuisine.
The menu lists a quail pithivier with foie gras and local oyster mushrooms, and a smoked veal chop for two with Vinzel biscottes, chanterelles and black garlic. Turbot Dugléré comes with violin courgette and saffron potatoes. For dessert there is a brioche perdue with Piedmont hazelnuts and gianduja. The wine list leans on Geneva and French crus, and the vaulted cellar is used for private receptions.
