The story
Gasthaus Höhwald, at Monbielerstrasse 171 in Klosters, serves Alpine and Swiss cooking in the Walser village of Monbiel, 1,300 meters up. Gault&Millau awarded it 13 points in 2026.
Mara and Thomas Graef have run the house since late 2023. Thomas, born in Austria, trained at the Shiki restaurant in Vienna and later led the kitchen at the IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau in Brail. Mara hosts and is the house's wine specialist, with earlier stints at TIAN and Atlantis by Giardino. The Michelin Guide lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.
Gault&Millau's review preferred the traditional dishes: pork knuckle, brown-braised lamb, and roast beef with fried onions and croquettes. The yellowfin mackerel, served both raw and poached beside a saffron risotto, was singled out as flawless. The Höhwald Plättli, with local sheep's Salsiz and Partuner alpine cheese, comes with homemade bread. Children get a Wiener Schnitzel with large fries.
The main dining room has an open fireplace and plenty of wood, with space for up to 80. The Jägerstübli, hung with hunting trophies, seats 25 and has a window into the kitchen. On the terrace, up to 65 guests look out over Klosters. Dogs are welcome.
